You can stay if you want to
but you can't sleep in my bed
- Stay, Small Sins
This morning I had breakfast at The New Place with the feminists, which is just far enough into the gritty core to keep away the In Style majority but close enough to allow a spectrum of Hip Young Kids in tights and boots and Wool Hat Granola Mommies to mingle with locals. The food was diner perfection, I had something that would have been better if I was hungover but was still greasy amazing and bottomless coffee. Low end with veg options? I'm not even sure I came across this perfection in the world class cities I hit up last year.
Last night was fun enough. Lately I'm just social enough to maintain a reputation, but I'm almost officially off the circuit. I kept the drinking to a double plus soda before taking the stage and called it a night, catching a cab to fall asleep near the lovely boy. My contributions raised a fair chunk of cash and I took home some random stuff, a cut with a stylist known for doing amazing hair among my class, a giant basket of fair trade everything. I have a love-hate relationship with charity events, as usually the cause is good but I end up wondering why I didn't just cut a cheque? In the end, though, I would have been a lot less likely to give the money if I didn't feel like I was getting something, no matter how bleeding heart altruist I feel on a given day. So maybe it makes enough sense.
I'm supposed to be preparing for teaching tomorrow and a bunch of deadlines this week but instead am scanning fashion week wrap ups and new cd releases, plus imagining how I could build a custom nightstand with spaces for things I keep by my bed (like my laptop and cellphone charger), possibly out of refurbished materials. I'm also considering constructing a more appropriate lamp...
