the grind

Today I was in a small town working. On the way home there was brief fetishism around being a workaholic, a conversation between someone half a career in and me. Logging the hours, burning the candle at both ends, the usual. It should be noted that after six years of this he had considered a career change entirely and took drastic steps to wind up in his current position.

But still, we can't help but idolize someone able to surpass physical and mental constraints. Who can, in theory, do things we cannot. Professional olympians.

I really hope that when all is said and done the main attribute remark on, if my name still exists after all is said and done, is never my work ethic.

In a lot of ways, I picked a perfect career because even utmost success here is only among peers. Intellectual giants among us are both quasi anonymous and surpassable by a new edition. I have never met anyone at the top of the game that I envied.

My life is awesomely mundane. I had a killer yoga session tonight - somehow despite being neglected for half a week my arms were like flexible powerhouses. Last night I baked a double batch of blueberry oatmeal rusks, using fresh blueberries. This weekend I'm taking on pizza dough from scratch and possibly packing most of my stuff for a Sept. 1 move. I'm seeing a house tomorrow. Because the market is over picked by incoming students, if I don't find somewhere I may tell my landlord he's screwed and stay until November or December when everyone drops out and goes home.

I realized that next summer may be my final op to see Kelly Slater surf competitively, assuming he retires after 10 titles. Although my love for Andy Irons is undying, and somewhat unexplainable, watching Slater move in a wave, even on video, is mindblowing. How he approaches, how he moves his upper body, his confidence in reading the situation translating into steady movement. I could see that with all my friends in my favorite place in the world, likely next summer (winter)...
